Participative listening walks

A collection of participatory sound experiences inviting the audience to walk, listen, and reimagine their relationship with the soundscapes of cities, forests, and remote landscapes. Each project unfolds through shared exploration, active listening, and a deep engagement with place.

Into the Forest

Eavesdropping (2019 - 21)

Listening workshop for teenagers
Eavesdropping (original title Luistervinken) introduces teenagers to soundscape ecology, the study of how natural and human-made sounds coexist. Together, participants walk into the city forest to practice new ways of listening: tuning in to rustling leaves, insect calls, and birdsong, while mapping the sound environment around them.

Sound Around

Participatory performance and sound walk
In Sound Around, participants explore the city’s hidden symphony: the hums, rumbles, and whistles that form its breathing rhythm. Together, we learn to echo and play with these urban sounds, transforming them into a shared musical experience.
The walk begins at Altitude 100, the highest point in Brussels, and descends into an unexpected valley, where participants co-create a collective soundscape blending the sonic textures of the city and its inhabitants.

In the footsteps of the Zenne

Sound walk and urban exploration
Brussels was born from the River Zenne, once flowing openly through the city. After centuries of pollution and flooding, it was buried underground in the 19th century, its path altered and nearly forgotten.
This walk retraces the lost course of the Zenne, from the Bourse to the Sewers Museum, where its voice can still be heard beneath the streets. Along the way, participants listen to how the modern city resonates above the river’s buried flow, revealing how water, memory, and sound shape urban space.

Listening Walk (2024)

Self-guided and group sound walk
During this walk, participants explore distinct sounds using specific listening methods indicated on a digital map. We begin by attuning to both natural and human-made sounds, observing how they shape our emotions and sense of place.
Our route follows the river, diverging occasionally toward the shore, inviting each listener to immerse themselves in a personal soundscape.
Originally conceived as a self-guided digital tour (2023), the project evolved into a guided group walk departing from Naturum Abisko in 2024.
Collaboration: with Naturum Abisko (Sweden), presented in Changing Perspectives, Naturum Abisko Expo (2023–2024)
