Dawn chorus in the Brussels Metro Stations (2023)

Early Voices gives nature a voice once again by playing the dawn chorus in metro stations, from the early morning until midday.
During the Week of Sound festival, the birdsong from Early Voices replaces the usual intercom music in the metro halls, creating a calming, sunny atmosphere for commuters waiting in the dark tunnels on their way to the festival.
Early Voices takes us back to the voices of a distant past. What lived in Brussels before humans settled here, and what did it sound like?
This sound piece is based on bird calls that reflect the current state of the ecosystem. The dawn chorus was recorded last spring deep in the Sonian Forest.
Now, these once-lost urban sounds are being reintroduced into the public space of the metro, an isolated yet widely used means of transport that connects diverse neighborhoods, but perhaps also distances us from our natural environment.

Installation XXL at Place Fontainas Brussels
(Summer Festival 2023)
Later in the year, the birdsongs of Early Voices found a new home within the XXL bamboo installation “Lean on Me” by artist Gilles Duinslaeger at Place Fontainas. At the gateway to Brussels’ pedestrian zone, the square transforms into a sanctuary where the delicate architecture of bamboo intertwines with the dawn chorus of the Sonian Forest. Visitors are invited to wander, pause, and lose themselves in this enchanting space, letting the melodies of birds and the gentle embrace of bamboo create a moment of calm and wonder in the heart of the city.
